COOL ROOFS

The Infrared Photo below shows temperature variation of different colored surfaces. As infrared rays from the sun are absorbed by darker colored surfaces, those surfaces get hot and show up as red.  Lighter colored surfaces, such as white, show up as green.  Blue is the coolest temperature and is the Sacramento River.  Green is also indicative of vegetation.

So what does this all mean?  Looking at the chart, Roof temperatures vary greatly depending on their color.  On a +90°F day, look at the difference of roof surface temperatures between roofs coated with White Acrylics versus other conventional types of roofs.   Surface temperatures were reduced from 160°F to 100°F where coated white.

We have all been in roof addicts on a hot summer day and know how hot it gets.  The same principal exists for commercial roofs.  The hotter the roof, the warmer it gets inside.  This is why the Cool Roof Program is accelerating.

  • Cool Roofs drastically reduce consumer summer time energy cost for air conditioning.
  • Another benefit is that the existing roof stays much cooler. Heat is generally bad for the roof because it accelerates aging, weathering, and makes the roof brittle.
  • By keeping the roof cool, you can greatly extend the life of the roof.
